The job of doing education in the public schools has never been harder. This is partly because public schools have become an unregulated government monopoly with little direct civilian control and zero marketplace feedback. Partly it is the very complexity and diversity of our population these days. Immigration has been on the rise again for the past decade, bringing a new round of assimilation issues into play. And there is less and less consensus about what is to be taught and how.
